Zerocater is one of the top providers of corporate catering and cafeteria solutions that employees love. They offer a white-glove dining experience personalized to employees’ tastes and dietary restrictions, with flexible options for companies of all sizes, budgets and meal subsidy types.

The challenge

As a company with HQ office roles like sales and engineering, in addition to front-of-house staff like catering managers, Zerocater can’t take a cookie-cutter approach to hiring. But unfortunately, with the other ATS, they encountered a few major challenges that were beginning to concern their Director of Recruiting, Theresa Morgan:

  • Adapting to unpredictable hiring spikes required a system that could scale: In an average month, Zerocater hires from 25 to 30 employees, but when they land a larger customer, they may need to make as many as 50+ hires. This fluctuation means their hiring process needs to run smoothly and scale without breaking. “We have to be ready to go and pivot on a dime,” Theresa explained.
  • A “cost-saving” switch to another ATS led to unexpected cost increases and inefficiencies: Tempted by the promise of an all-in-one solution and lower pricing, Zerocater briefly switched from Greenhouse to another ATS. But the new platform lacked the core functionality her team relied on – like scheduling and job board integrations. “It was going to cost me more money than what Greenhouse was going to cost in the end. And I wasn’t a fan of their scheduling,” Theresa said. Even worse, bottlenecks and technical issues nearly jeopardized a major client. “I know for a fact that with the other ATS, we would not have been able to staff the client in time,” she said. “That would have had a massively negative impact on the business.”
  • Hiring across roles demanded flexibility: Zerocater’s recruiting team hires for both technical and front-line roles, which means different workflows, candidate journeys and hiring manager expectations. “There are different candidate touchpoints you have with different types of roles – they all need love in different places,” said Theresa.

Theresa added, “Almost three months into the implementation of the new ATS, I was still encountering issues. It was slowing my team down. I was frustrated. I could tell my team was frustrated. If we lose our motivation, it reflects in our work and that ultimately impacts whether people accept the job or not.“

The solution

  • Reliable essential recruiting functions like job boards: Greenhouse ensures critical components – like job boards – run smoothly behind the scenes. “With the other vendor, our job board was disconnected for a month and we didn’t even know it. We spent thousands thinking we just weren’t getting applicants,” Theresa said. 
  • Clear pricing with no hidden costs: Theresa was especially frustrated by the other ATS’ approach to licensing, which meant she’d end up paying for more licenses to give people permission for basic tasks like viewing candidate notes and scorecards. It would also be time consuming to monitor and manage moving seats around. Since Greenhouse doesn’t charge per seat, she knew exactly what the cost would be and who would have access.

For the first time in a long time, Theresa felt a sense of relief – Greenhouse was helping her team move forward with clarity and confidence.
